Let’s see; it’s another stunning Himalayan landscape. It happens to be a Sunday, a glorious clear day. People are still working, but they’re taking it easy. Let’s look a little closer.
Hmmm. Naked children splashing in cold Himalayan stream water. Men working nearby, cutting a log probably for a building project. Cattle wandering at will with occasional casual oversight by a boy in a red shirt. Mostly, they just browse where they want to. The rice has been harvested; the cattle are cleaning up and feeding themselves without the need for imported fodder. People are working to complete the harvest in the rice fields, according to long-established traditions and relationships. Don’t see a lot of stress here? Neither do I.
I don’t pretend to know what it would be like to live in this photo. Doubtless a lot more complicated than it looks. I’m just sharing how it feels to stand on the hilltop and watch. It feels really good. In fact, maybe I’m just ... happy?
